NFL pussy league

Two weeks ago Oakland DE Richard Seymour was fined $25,000 for decking Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethliesberger. The Steeler signal-caller tossed a TD pass and then let Seymour hear about it. Seymour responded with a shot to Big Ben’s chops, and was immediately ejected. The NFL powers-that-be don’t like this sort of thing, and have implemented rules to make the game appear more professional while discouraging spontaneous acts of aggression. The result is a sanitized version of the original product that didn’t need any tinkering with in the first place.

Last week Houston WR Andre Johnson and Tennessee CB Cortland Finnegan were also fined $25,000 each for fighting. Finnegan later compared the NFL’s view of fighting to that of the NHL where players receive only a five-minute penalty for the same offense, and get three fights before they’re ejected.

``This is the NFL, not the NHL, and it's a higher standard,'' Finnegan said. ``That's the NHL. They fight. They get penalized for that. The NFL, it's not even heard of ... you do that, you're suspended. Hands down.”

The obvious question is: Why? And whose idea was it to “clean up” football to the point where little skirmishes like the one between Johnson and Finnegan result not only in ejections and fines but potential suspensions?

It’s no wonder Pittsburgh S Troy Polumalu recently compared the NFL to soccer. What a sad fall from grace it’s been for the National Football League from the days of Dick Butkus and Ray Nitzschke to its present sissified version that is getting harder and harder to watch.

The main problem is that the sport is being administrated by the likes of Roger Goddell and his ilk, executives and lawyers who are nothing more than women trapped in men’s bodies. Unfortunately for professional football players and fans alike, the NFL’s shot callers missed their true callings as hairdressers and interior decorators. Why don’t they just hired Oprah as commissioner and get it over with.

Nobody wants to see players squaring off like they do in the NHL but what’s wrong with a little scrap here and there when emotions boil over. I’d rather see players so into the game that they temporarily lose their cool and take it out on the opposition than players who fail to show up and don’t give a full effort. Why aren’t there fines for lazy losers who take games off or simply go through the motions (Randy Moss)?

The NFL is presently being desecrated by Roger Goddell and his similarly inclined predecessors, who have ruined the sport much the same way NHL worm Gary Bettman stole Canada’s great game and Americanized it so they could sell the sport in L.A. and the deep south. Handing over football to lawyers and executives was a recipe for disaster and the ugly results are now playing out before our eyes.

Oh yeah, almost forgot…Steeler LB James Harison was fined $25,000 again for a “helmet-first” hit on Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. It was his fourth fine this year bringing his grand total to $125,000. Sorry to break the news to you Roger, but that’s how we were taught to play the game.
